Originally named Weltschaft, but re-branded Ruhrgold in the 1990s, the modern German contestant is the InterCityExpress (or Inter-Continental Express as he was called in the 1992 London revamp.)

Personality

Ruhrgold is generally portrayed as very focused on the race, very determined to win. He's less interested in the politics and bickering, he just wants to prove he's the best.

In the London production, once he and Joule had lost the race, Ruhrgold collapsed on the floor. Joule hauled him up by his couplings, and spanked him as they left the stage.

Role

In the original London production, Weltschaft raced with Joule in Heat two, but lost to Electra and Pearl. However in Germany he swapped roles with Bobo the French train, so that he wins the 2nd Heat and takes Joule to the final. In the US/UK tours, Ruhrgold appears in the filmed race footage racing with Caboose.

In the Japan/Australia tours he was named Weltschaft, while his counterpart was named "Flying Hamburger".

Name Change

Although for simplicity's sake the original green costume is often referred to as Weltschaft, and the modern ICE costume is known as Ruhrgold, in fact the Bochum production staggered the changes - the 1992 cast saw the green costume known as Ruhrgold, getting his new design the following year. The London production changed the character's name in 1992, as part of "The New Starlight Express", but kept the green/grey costume.
